For the Kasnockerl, mix an egg, flour, water and salt to a creamy dough. In a saucepan, bring salted water to a boil and drop dumplings from the dough into the boiling water with a spoon.

Cook the dumplings for 10 minutes and strain. Chop the onion. Heat oil in a pan and fry the onion until golden brown.

Add the dumplings and continue to fry until they are lightly browned.

Sprinkle the grated cheese on top and stir until it starts to pull threads. Season the cheese dumplings with salt and pepper and serve.
