Peel the pears, cut them in half and remove the core. Place the halves close together in a buttered ovenproof gratin dish and sprinkle with enough sugar. Place a small piece of butter on each pear half. Then bake in the oven at medium heat for about 30 minutes. From time to time, baste with the resulting juice. When the sugar is nicely caramelized, add the whipped cream, mix well and return to the stove for a few minutes. Bring to the table hot!
